Certified Sustainability: LEDVANCE To Provide Environmental Product Declarations For 80% of Its Professional Luminaire Portfolio in Europe by 2026. LEDVANCE is committed to measuring and reducing the environmental impact of its products and services. With externally verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) the company now provides comparable, objective and third-party verified data regarding the environmental performance of its portfolio in Europe.
For an EPD, the environmental performance is evaluated in a transparent, systematic analysis over the entire life cycle of a product, displaying several indicators such as global warming potential or the depletion of abiotic resources. LEDVANCE publishes EPDs via PEP Ecopassport®, following an industry-defined standard for luminaires. As a member of the P.E.P Association, LEDVANCE has contributed to and advocated for the innovative lighting standard PSR0014 for luminaire EPDs in collaboration with Lighting Europe and the PEP Association.
Andreas Adam, Head of Global Sustainability at LEDVANCE:
“EPDs quantify the environmental footprint of our lighting solutions throughout their life cycle. Our objective is to have externally verified EPDs for at least 80 percent of our entire professional luminaire portfolio in Europe by the end of 2026. To date, we are 25 percent into the journey with 24 EPDs covering 330 products, and we have prioritized our highest-demand products so that our customers and the public are able to access this information as soon as possible.”
According to the United Nations Climate Change secretariat (UNFCCC), electricity for lighting accounts for approximately 15 percent of the global power consumption and for 5 percent of the worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. With a global transition to efficient lighting, these emissions could be reduced by over one-third.
Jue Wang, Executive Senior Vice President at LEDVANCE:
“Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important topic in lighting. Customers are looking for better solutions or products in terms of environmental aspects. EPDs give verified information about the environmental impact of a product over its entire lifecycle. For us as a company, the learnings gained from the EPDs are valuable to further advance sustainable innovations in the lighting sector.”
As Life Cycle Assessments of LEDVANCE products show that the use phase dominates the environmental impact of luminaires during their life cycle, LEDVANCE is dedicated to optimizing power consumption during the use phase by involving intelligent control of luminaires with sensors and Smart Light Management Systems.
